The Guilford Parks and Recreation Department (PRD) is hosting a meeting with the community at the Community Center on October 29 at 5:00 pm. The PRD intends to review concerns raised at the October 10th Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) meeting. The PRD will discuss any design changes with the public at the October 29th meeting. The PZC will vote on the plan as presented by the PRD at their November 7th meeting.
I am concerned about the number of trees and their location in this proposed plan. I understand how some residents might find additional shade beneficial, but I think it's important that this remain a Town Beach, not a Park. The addition of trees across the beach-facing edge of the parking lot and across the island in the center of the parking lot will be detrimental to all in terms of view, maintenance required, and general change of character. A beach is for sea, sun, and sand. Those seeking shadier surroundings can go to the many parks and the nearby Town Green. Also, umbrellas and simple, inexpensive shade structures are readily available from local vendors.
ReplyDeleteAs for the proposed permanent shade structure, I appreciate it's elegant design and uniqueness, but it's far more complex, expensive, and permanent than necessary. If it remains as part of the project, it should be smaller and removable.
Beach improvements are desirable, and there are a number of nice elements in this proposal. Unfortunately, the design has gone far beyond what is necessary and affordable.
